An alcoholic who helped dismantle a stolen £55,000 BMW has been told by Judge Kevin Haugh to stop "shilly-shallying" or he would serve a substantial sentence.

Dermot Ryan's statement that he believed a man he met in a pub wanted him to repaint an almost new BMW in a garage at the rear of his mother's house was "self-serving and disingenuous".

Ryan (34), of Hughes Road South, Dublin, pleaded guilty to handling the BMW on February 14th, 1996, knowing it was stolen.

Garda Martin Halion told Mr Gerry O'Brien, prosecuting, that as a result of confidential information, he searched Ryan's house where he found a number of body parts of the car.

Judge Haugh adjourned sentence until March 9th, 1998. Unless the court was satisfied he had faced up to his alcohol problem and received treatment, a substantial sentence would be imposed.
