Grenoble - Five French skiers were killed and two injured, one seriously, when an avalanche swept them off a slope yesterday near the winter resort of Orcieres in the French Alps, police and one of the survivors said.

Rescue workers using specially trained dogs dragged the fifth body from the snow-slide late yesterday.

The group of seven people, all locals, were on a cross-country ski when they were caught in the avalanche. One of the party, Ms Claire Gleizes, summoned help.
