The bomber, who detonated his explosives in a pedestrian precinct near Tel Aviv's former central bus station, was the only fatality. According to eye-witnesses, a second Palestinian attacker attempted to open fire on civilians. But when his gun apparently jammed he fled and was apprehended by police.
The Israeli Prime minister, Mr Ariel Sharon, is to meet President Bush in Washington on February 7th.
