Tehran - Twenty-two people were killed and 40 others injured in an avalanche on a road east of the Iranian capital on Tuesday night, the official IRNA news agency reported yesterday.

The victims were passengers of a bus and people in two cars, the agency said, quoting police officials in Rud-e-Hen, east of Tehran.

Meanwhile, nearly 260 political prisoners, mainly separatist Kurds, ended a 55-day hunger-strike in two jails in eastern Turkey yesterday, the Justice Minister, Mr Oltan Sungurlu, announced.
