More than £1 million has been paid for a 12-acre parcel of land on the outskirts of Carlow town. The land at Hacketstown Road was sold for £1,040,000, a record £86,300 per acre for the area.

This was the first piece of land in the Carlow urban district council area to come up for public auction for some time. Mr Charlie McDermott, the auctioneer who conducted the sale, said the land was bought by another local auctioneer in trust for a developer. Mr McDermot confirmed that the 12 acres was zoned for residential development.
