IT’S GOT 600 acres and an interior that has taken nearly a decade to renovate, but Ireland’s latest hotel, Ballyfin, near Portlaoise, won’t be for everyone. That’s because the fabulous 1820s mansion, with extensive gardens and its own church, will have just 15 bedrooms when it finally opens in May.
Ballyfin House and Demesne is aiming to be one of the best small hotels in Europe, according to its Irish backer, garden designer Jim Reynolds who has a small stake in the venture.
The main investment in the 1820s house has been made by Chicago-based businessman Mr Fred Krehbiel, a founder of Molx electronics which has a plant in Shannon.
The hotel is being pitched at the very top of the market, but does not have a golf course. Instead its grounds have woodlands, follies, gorrtos, water features, an aviary and a large walled garden as well as an estate church. Reynolds says it will be one of the most comfortable small hotels in Europe, but you’ll have to check in to find out. The house will be open to residents only.
The house has several glorious reception rooms as well as a superb conservatory. An 80ft library runs the length of its facade while the drawingroom (above) has been decorated in an elaborate French style.
The 13 bedrooms and two suites are furnished with art and antiques but will also have iPod docking stations and wireless internet. Rates are yet to be confirmed.
