Second Hand Sense:THE DODGE Caliber was an American alternative to family saloon choices such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus. It could hardly be more different - and, judging by its rarity on Irish roads, may be too different altogether.

Its styling is aggressive, with a small window area, high side profile and large grille. It's a very American crossover concept intended to attract younger drivers wanting something to make more of a statement than your conventional saloon.

While it has the look of a four wheel drive, the Caliber is front wheel drive. The car sold here is the 2-litre diesel, equipped with Volkswagen's well-proven, but ageing, oil burner.

Although only slightly higher than a Focus, it feels like more and has a comfortable seating position. Ride is good but handling is soft. The diesel engine has good torque and delivers good economy, despite its bulk, of about 47 miles to the gallon.

Dashboard and equipment are very American, with chunky switches and a chrome finish. The glass area is far more restrictive than many competitors and the rear windscreen has limited visibility. The boot is generous and rear seats fold flat.

But is this really a family saloon choice, even for the younger buyer? The reason cars like the Golf and Focus are popular is because they are good, but understated. In Europe, the "in your face" styling of the Caliber doesn't fit, no matter how practical it might be. Besides, it is no more practical than either of its strongest competitors.

The Caliber was awarded only four out of five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test programme because of the perceived potential for leg injuries in a collision. So far it has proven reliable, but a limited number have been recalled for ABS problems.

For its price, the car is well equipped - multiple airbags, stability control, ABS and air conditioning. If it appeals to you as a second-hand prospect, its popularity is limited and there are only a handful out there.

A 2006 car with additional airbags, cruise control and 54,000km is €10,950. Another 2006 with sat-nav and 64,000km is €13,000.

The Caliber, then, needs to be "your" kind of car which, for many, it's just not.
