Dining table makes €70,000 at Adam’s auction

St Stephen's Green auctioneers Adam's decamped to Co Kildare this week and sold an impressive 89 per cent of 600 lots offered in Wednesday's on-site auction of the contents of Courtown House.

The 54-room Georgian mansion, on 400 acres near Kilcock, was recently bought by Monaco-based Irish property developer Luke Comer for a reputed €10.2 million and the vendor, solicitor Brendan O'Mahony, was disposing of furniture and assorted antiques and collectibles.

Kieran O’Boyle of Adam’s said they were “delighted with a strong turnout, competitive bidding throughout and high percentage sold”.

The highest price was achieved for a mahogany dining table, attributed to early 19th-century Dublin cabinet-makers Gillingtons, which made €70,000 – double the top estimate (€25,000-€35,000). Among the other top lots: a pair of Irish Regency neo-classical torchères "attributed to Del Vecchio, Dublin", €28,000 (€20,000- €30,000); a pair of George III inlaid mahogany dining-room pedestals with surmounted lidded urns €20,500 (€15,000-€20,000) and a carved giltwood side table, bought at the Carton House auction in 1977, €20,000 (€20,000-€30,000).
