The Wine Buff is a chain of (mainly) franchise wine shops. Founded in December 2000 by Paddy O’Flynn, Mike O’Donnell and Daragh Moore, there are now 13 outlets, including one in Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. All of the wines the chain stocks are imported directly from the producer. They can also be bought online from Thewinebuff.com.
Here, I feature two of their wines that would be suitable for Christmas dinner. Both the Rueda and Dão regions can offer good value for money. Rueda lies a two-hour drive north of Madrid. Most of the wines are white and made from either sauvignon blanc or the local verdejo grape. The wines made using verdejo can actually taste quite like a sauvignon; aromatic, fresh and fruity, with a dry finish.
Dão is in the north of Portugal and has a cool, damp climate. The area produces both red and white wines, with the reds tending to be light and refreshing. They can offer fantastic value for money.
If you are feeling flush, the Casar de Burbia Godello from Bierzo (€22.99) would go nicely with your starter, as well as turkey. Rioja Reserva is a good traditional choice for the Christmas dinner, so the Bodegas Ontañon 2015 (€26.99) would fit the bill nicely.
