It’s Belfast’s turn to present a home-produced Wagner opera, with performances of Der fliegende Holländer (in English as The Flying Dutchman) at the Grand Opera House tonight and Sunday. The cast is predominantly Irish, with Belfast singers Giselle Allen and Bruno Caproni as Senta and the Dutchman (above); Derry’s Doreen Curran as Mary; and Limerick’s Paul McNamara as Erik. The NI Opera production is directed by Oliver Mears, the designer is Simon Holdsworth, and Nicholas Chalmers conducts the Ulster Orchestra.

In Dublin, the original 1930 version of Prokofiev’s Fourth Symphony gets an outing from the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra under Alan Buribayev tonight, along with Grieg (the Peer Gynt suites) and Saint-Saëns (the Fifth Piano Concerto with Lilya Zilberstein).

The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and one of its former music directors, Jacek Kaspszyk, are at the NCH on Monday in a programme of Bernstein (Candide Overture), Szymanowski (Concert Overture), Philip Glass (the Violin Concerto No 1 with Agata Szymczewska), and Schubert (the Great C major Symphony).

And, on Wednesday, violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney join the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, again at the NCH, for a chamber music evening of Ian Wilson, Chopin, Galina Grigorjeva, Ravel and Franck.
