Jeff Tweedy's sojourn from Wilco was ostensibly to be with his family at a fateful time – his wife, after whom Sukierae is titled, was being treated for cancer. Happily, she is reportedly making a good recovery, but the crisis prompted this remarkable album by her husband and their 18-year-old drummer son, Spencer. If anything, these 20 tracks are more intense and personal than Tweedy's feted work with Wilco. There are dark clouds aplenty, mainly expressed in moody, spectral beauty such as Nobody Dies Anymore, High as Hello and the gossamer waltz, Wait for Love. Tweedy's gift for timeless melodies with a twist has never been more evident. In Wilco's left-field adventures, his songs are the platform. Here they are everything. wilcoworld.net
