Nightmares on Wax's George Evelyn has been a Warp mainstay since the get-go, and both label and producer are marking 25 years . N.O.W. Is the Time is a classy round-up of the evolution of the Leeds producer's sound over a quarter century, from the bleep adventures of the early days to the hazy, smokey funk and soul of later years. The retrospective makes for a sizeable haul: two CDs brimming with fat, majestic cuts from those back-in-the-day electronic forages that produced Dextrous and Aftermath through to the chill-out years, when Evelyn's Les Nuits skilfully recalibrated, recast and rebuilt Quincy Jones's Summer in the City. For a real indulgence, go for the Deep Down box set, complete with a dozen or so choice remixes and a book on all things N.O.W. past and present.
