Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Still Elton John’s best and most complete work, this 1973 double album was shot through with sentiment and nostalgia for times past. There’s a very good reason why this remains John’s biggest selling studio album – there’s quality aplenty. The most famous songs (the title track, Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, Saturday’s Night Alright for Fighting) are but half the story. Just reissued in a number of formats, including a massive box set, what’s under consideration here is a new 35-song, double-CD release containing the original plus a new tribute album. Ed Sheeran takes on Candle in the Wind, John Grant does Painted Lady, and there’s many more besides. Have a good roam through and discover, to your surprise, how some (but definitely not all) of the tribute artists do a better job than the originals.
