Volume On, Family Edition***
A round-up of the Brooklyn duo's releases to date,
Volume Ongives listeners a chance to assess their club tropicalia before their debut album proper lands. Indeed, this is the second album from Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm this year, as both are also in Restless People. Their tracks as Tanlines possess a giddy, infectious dance-floor sheen, and that's even before the remixers call round. While others set their synths to stun, Tanlines set theirs to sway, adding swirls of lovely, sun- dappled percussion pitter-patter and colourful guitars to the mix. It's a blend that allows the duo to fine-tune pop smarts (
Bejan), dance-floor sensibilities
(New Flowers) and solid melodic strains (
Real Life) throughout. The remixers, too, are on the money, embellishing rather than over-egging. The Memory Tapes version of
Real Life is the finest example, a rearrangement that is rich, simple and perfectly pitched. See myspace.com/ tanlinestheband
