Suuns' first album, Zeroes QC (2010), established them as a quartet who thrive on dark, sinister grooves. The PR describes their approach rather more extravagantly as "using minimalist techniques to create maximalist works", but it's an accurate account of the Montreal band's sound. Occasionally, Ben Shemie co make like a hybrid of Depeche Mode and Wild Beasts (on Minor Work, for example); elsewhere there are echoes of Primal Scream's more experimental creations, while Bambi and the meditative Holocene City evoke fellow young bucks Wu Lyf and The xx. Despite these influences, there is a unique quality to the industrial, dystopian undercurrent snaking through the songs. The heavy-industry nihilism is a little heavy-handed on occasion, but overall it works, weaving a sonic snare that is deeply intriguing. suuns.band camp.com
