Pop music being the way it is, Madonna must seem like an old granny compared to the likes of Lady Gaga and Florence Welch. Certainly, on the major stage, Gaga would appear to

be La Ciccone’s strongest rival, but, you know, Maddy ain’t no fool, and so the figures alone for Sticky Sweet are impressive – it’s the highest grossing tour to date for a solo artist. Also, what she has over Gaga is a superb back- catalogue and a steadfast fanbase that isn’t specifically teen-oriented. She’s no slouch visually, either.

While Gaga has the naivete of youth (she thinks her Haus-designed costumes are works of art when really they’re just plain silly), Madonna has the experience to know what works and what doesn’t. It is this that makes Sticky Sweet such an interesting proposition: a superbly shot movie of the “four-act” show that blends muscle with music, depth with deftness. There’s still life in the old granny, then. Extras include behind-the-scenes footage. See madonna.com
