Anyone can apply to their local health board to foster. Applications are considered locally, and the process can take months.

A social worker examines the applicants to establish their suitability. Detailed interviews take place in their own home.

The assessment will deal with issues such as health, finance, general character and ability to cope with stress. Garda clearance is also sought.

Successful applicants receive training to prepare the carer for possible problems and to integrate the child into their home.

When the application is passed, it is decided what type of foster care the child needs (e.g. short-term, day care, weekend care, long-term or special needs care). Then the child is introduced to the foster family.
