Veteran director Bertrand Tavernier will be guest of honour at the 17th Cork French Film Festival next Thursday. Tavernier will discuss his work following a screening of his latest film, Holy Lola, which deals with a French couple seeking to adopt a child in Cambodia.

The festival, which opened last night and continues until tomorrow week, features such notable recent French-language productions as Denys Arcand's The Barbarian Invasions, Éléonore Faucher's Brodeuses, Ismaël Ferroukhi's Le Grand Voyage, Christophe Barratier's Les Choristes, and Jacques Audiard's superb The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Classics on show will include Jean Renoir's La Règle du Jeu (1939) and Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995). There will be a documentary programme and screenings for schools. The principal venue is Triskel Arts Centre, while Holy Lola will be shown at the Gate cinema. www.triskelart.com
