Grace Henry: A Retrospective

Emily Grace Mitchell was born in Aberdeenshire in Scotland in 1868, one of 10 children of a Church of Scotland minister. After finishing school in London, Grace, like many fledgling European artists of the time, went on to study in Brussels and then Paris. There she met and, in 1903, married Paul Henry (they later separated, but never divorced).

The Henrys settled in Surrey but, in 1912, they visited Achill for a brief holiday and ended up staying for the best part of a decade. In the 1920s they moved to Dublin.

Grace studied further with French Cubist Andre Lhote for a time, but remained a representational painter with a leaning towards Fauvism rather than becoming a Cubist. She travelled a lot, painting in France and Italy. She died in 1953.

All of these stages and locations of Grace's life are reflected in her work, which has to an extent been eclipsed by that of her husband. This show, including many works from private and public collections, provides a welcome chance to assess Grace Henry in her own right.
