Image of the week: Luxury for the jet set
Glossing aside the obvious design flaw of not being able to see that massive flatscreen from the bed, this artist’s rendering of a potential custom interior suite for Boeing’s 747-8 Intercontinental VIP jetliner has all the modern elegance of a living room from the last century, down to the mahogany-appearance coffee table adorned with newspapers.
Boeing made its first delivery of a 747-8 Intercontinental this week to an unidentified private customer, with the delivered jet set to undergo more than two years of work on the interior before it takes to the skies. Photomontage: Reuters/Boeing
The lexicon: Tradecraft
Metropolitan police deputy assistant commissioner Sue Akers used the word “tradecraft” this week in her witness statement to the Leveson inquiry into UK press standards to describe a practice whereby journalists hid cash payments to sources by cunningly making them to a friend or relative of the source. Essentially, such “tradecraft” means it’s hard to tell who was in receipt of bungs. “Whilst the activity is clearly evidenced, the actual identity of the public officials is hidden,” said Akers. This explains, she added, why to date more journalists than public officials have been arrested.
Getting to know: Lee Kun-hee
Chairman of South Korean electronics giant Samsung Lee Kun-hee (70) is currently facing two inter-familial lawsuits totalling $800 million – a sum that pretty much puts the average family squabble in the shade. Both Mr Lee’s sister, Lee Sook-hee, and his older brother Lee Maeng-hee (80), have filed suits against him in a dispute over shares left by their late father, Lee Byung-chull, who founded Samsung in 1938 by selling dried fish.
Even if he loses, the Samsung chairman can take the hit, being the richest man in South Korea, according to Forbes, with a personal fortune of about $8 billion.
The list: Banned ad slogans
The UK Advertising Standards Authority has told the Sofa King furniture shop to stop using its nine-year-old catchphrase: “Where the Prices are Sofa King Low!” (Say it out loud). But which other advertising slogans have fallen foul of regulators?
1 Roger More:Condom-maker Durex was forced to withdraw posters featuring a pun on Bond actor Roger Moore, following complaints (though not from Moore).
2 Hottest Back to School Fares: A 2008 effort from serial offender Ryanair featuring a model dressed as a Britney-style "sexy schoolgirl".
3 Nothing Tastes as Good as Skinny Feels: Retailer Zazzle was banned from advertising T-shirts featuring this "pro-ana" slogan inspired by a Kate Moss quote.
4 Where Have All the Women Gone? Paddypowerbingo.comjuxtaposed this with an image of a man breastfeeding. The manboobs proved too much for the Tube.
5 She's Only After One Thing:Accompanied by images of a couple posing suggestively, this 2006 poster slogan is from "shockvertisers" Hunky Dory.
