Oracle, the world's biggest database software maker, yesterday posted first-quarter profits up 111 per cent to $501 million (€581.21 million).

The Redwood Shores, California-based company, which is in the process of increasing its Irish workforce to 1,000, also set a two-for-one stock split. Shares closed up $3-1/8 at $84-15/16.
