The French telecommunication company, Alcatel, has agreed a €7.1 billion deal to acquire Newbridge Networks, the Canadian networking solutions company which employs 24 people at its logistics and distribution centre in Shannon, Co Clare.

Former president and chief operations officer of Newbridge Networks, Mr Pearse Flynn, originally from Cork, has been appointed president of Alacatel's new Internet working division and chief executive of Newbridge Networks.
