The Minister for Health and Children, Mr Martin, is proposing to require that nursing homes which benefit from tax concessions should be registered to ensure a satisfactory standard of care.

The Minister has indicated it will be necessary to make regulations governing standards in convalescent homes, which may cover areas such as staffing and facilities. The scheme of tax allowances for capital expenditure on private convalescent homes was introduced in the 1999 Finance Act.
