TELEPHONE group Mercury Communications yesterday received the green light from the European Commission for its plans to merge with three of the UK's largest cable companies.

The new company, Cable & Wireless Communications, will pose a direct threat to the UK's largest player BT.

Under the proposals, Mercury, in which Cable & Wireless has a majority stake, will merge with VideoIron, Nynex Communications and Bell Cablemedia.
