Business lobby IBEC has called for the compulsory teaching of modern European languages in all primary schools. A pilot project operating in 281 primary schools is inadequate, said Mr Brendan Butler, director of social policy at IBEC. The project introduces students to either French, German, Spanish, or Italian but involves only 1.5 hours tuition a week for 5th and 6th class pupils, say IBEC.
