TDs and Senators at this week's Oireachtas Joint Committee on Enterprise and Small Business and Services lost no time in expressing their ire at the non-appearance of Irish Life's David Went. The committee had summoned Went, but he declined to show on the basis that the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and Irish Life were conducting a review of their policies. Chairman, Ivor Callely of Fianna Fail dubbed his behaviour as "grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecendented". However, with department officials talking to Irish Life, surely Mr Went had a point. And anyway the poor man was in New York, presenting to investors. He later said he would appear whenever the committee wanted.
