Stocks moved in different directions yesterday, with blue chip issues rising after a closely watched inflation gauge rose less than expected. Technology stocks slumped, led by industry leaders like Qualcomm and Intel.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 66.11 at 10,687.95. Broader stock indicators were mixed. The Standard and Poor's 500 index edged up 1.14 to 1,470.58, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 53.65 at 3,797.41.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a four-to-three margin on the New York Stock Exchange. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies rose 1.38 to 515.13.

Most stocks rose after the Labour Department said the Consumer Price Index inched up 0.1 per cent in May. Many analysts had expected an increase of 0.2 per cent.
