Leontien Zijlaard of the Netherlands outsprinted an elite field in the first of the road cycling events' gold medals

Leontien Zijlaard of the Netherlands outsprinted an elite field in the first of the road cycling events' gold medals. She held an advantage of about three bike lengths over silver medallist Hanka Kupfernagel of Germany and Diana Ziliute of Lithuania after the 119.7km.

Zijlaard is now one step away from taking home her coach's prediction of four medals in her four events. She already has a gold and silver medal from the Track Cycling events and will also be riding the road Time Trial on Saturday.
