Wexford  2-16 Kilkenny  0-19 Wexford retained their title at Wexford Park yesterday evening, but only after extra-time. In the first half wasteful Wexford had eight wides to Kilkenny's two. However, a goal from Eddie Cullen, set up by Michael Jacob, helped them into a 1-6 to 0-8 lead.

Eight minutes into the second half an excellent Chris McGrath goal helped put the home side into a 2-6 to 0-10 lead. The Kilkenny response was swift and through excellent point-taking from Brian Phelan and substitute Diarmuid Mackey they held a single-point lead entering injury time, but Wexford forced extra time when McGrath pointed a 62nd minute free to leave the sides level, 0-17 to 2-11.

Wexford dominated the first period of extra time to lead 2-15 to 0-17 as Kilkenny amazingly failed to register a score. In a thrilling climax, Wexford held off a late Kilkenny surge.
