Temple emerge from dour tie

Gorey - 5, Mount Temple - 8

Gorey came out at the wrong end of this dour quarter-final replay at Dr Hickey Park, Greystones, where just one penalty, by stylish outhalf and captain, Ian Kelly, separated the sides. Mount Temple started the game in flying style and speedy running by their halfbacks and three-quarters put Gorey on the back foot. After just four minutes outhalf Ian Kelly gathered his own chip kick over the defence and released centre David Moore, who found number eight Darragh Ffrench at his side to collect a simple pass and dive over. The Gorey forwards fought back bravely, however, and their team began to get the measure of the opposition. Imaginative number eight Mark McDonnagh struck following heavy Gorey pressure when he charged down a clearance kick and won the race for the touchdown after just 13 minutes.

From there on the game was a forward battle, with little opportunity for running play in heavy underfoot conditions.

Gorey's dangerous winger, Denis Tompkins, did attempt some promising forays, but these were well cancelled out by Mount Temple winger Andy Coggin.

From half-time on, it always seemed as though one score would settle matters.

As indiscipline set in on the field, Mount Temple were awarded a penalty after 64 minutes, and Kelly secured a semi-final spot for Mount Temple with a cleanly-struck kick 30 metres from the posts.
