Swing heads to Falmouth

Arch Swing is likely to take on her elders for the first time in the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on July 11th.

John Oxx's filly, runner-up to Finsceal Beo in the 1,000 Guineas, put a disappointing run in the Irish equivalent firmly behind her when fourth in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last week. Oxx was thrilled with that performance and feels Arch Swing would have been closer to runaway winner Indian Ink if her run had not been checked at a crucial stage.

The Currabeg handler said: "She bounced out of the race fine and she's in good form, no problems. We hope to run her in the Falmouth Stakes next on the 11th of July at Newmarket.

"She ran well at Ascot and should have been second with a clear run. She just didn't get the run when she needed it and when she eventually got out she finished full of running. She didn't have a hard race, which has probably contributed to her bouncing out of it well. She has plenty of speed so I think a mile is the right distance for her at the moment."

Kevin Prendergast's Haatef is in good heart after recording his first victory of the season at Naas on Wednesday evening. The 2,000 Guineas disappointment bounced back to form with a five-length stroll in the Summer BBQ Race.

Haatef holds an entry in the July Cup but after his staying-on victory over seven furlongs, a sprinting campaign is likely to be put on hold. "He just needed a race but he has come out of it well," said Prendergast. "We probably made him do a little bit more than he should have but the race has done him good.

"It was an ideal starting point for him really. He got the trip really well so I don't see an extra furlong proving a problem to him.

"At this stage I would say a mile is more likely than six furlongs - but we'll see what the day brings with him."

Derby hero Authorized teamed up with Frankie Dettori on Friday morning as he enjoyed his last serious piece of work ahead of Sandown's Coral-Eclipse Stakes.

Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam has been delighted with his charge since he slammed his rivals at Epsom and declared himself more than satisfied with Authorized's latest spin.

He is now likely to have one more piece of light work before the July 7th showpiece, in which Aidan O'Brien's George Washington is also expected to take his chance. Chapple-Hyam said: "He worked over seven and a half furlongs and everything went to plan. I couldn't have been happier with his gallop and Frankie was delighted too. He seems to have progressed well from the Derby.

"That was his major piece of work before Sandown. I had to get one serious piece into him. He will now just have one more little blow as well as his routine exercise ahead of the Eclipse."

In today's John Smith's Northumberland Plate Tony Martin is expecting another bold show from Leg Spinner after his fourth behind Full House in the Ascot Stakes last week.

After landing a handicap hurdle at Perth in May, the six-year-old returned to the Flat with an encouraging display in the hands of Johnny Murtagh.

Leg Spinner has reportedly taken his recent outing well and will have the assistance of Jamie Spencer in the £200,000 feature.

Martin said yesterday: "Hopefully he'll go well as he seems in good form. I'm certainly very happy with the way he came back from Ascot so we'll give it a shot."
