Dyer keeps Toon Army in full voice

FA Cup round-up: Newcastle booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Southampton at St James' Park courtesy of a Kieron Dyer goal.

England midfielder Dyer put months of injury frustration behind him when he raced through to net the only goal after 68 minutes.

Southampton ended the game with 10 men and striker Dexter Blackstock in goal, after Bartosz Bialkowski was injured late on with all substitutes having been used.

Charlton booked their place in the quarter-finals for the first time in six seasons with a comfortable 3-1 win over Coca-Cola League One Brentford at The Valley.

Martin Allen’s promotion-chasers had knocked out Sunderland in the last round. There was, though, to be no repeat of those heroics as an early strike from England squad man Darren Bent put the Barclays Premiership club in command, with Jay Bothroyd’s effort on the stroke of half-time all but ending the tie.

To their credit the Bees continued to fight for every ball, but when Bryan Hughes rolled in a third goal just after the hour, pride was the only thing left to play for - and substitute Isaiah Rankin netted a deserved consolation goal with seven minutes left.

Charlton, however, will now have renewed hoped they could go all the way to the final of a competition they won back in 1947.

The all-Premiership clash between Bolton and West Ham will go to a replay at Upton Park after a goalless draw at the Reebok Stadium.

Bolton did have the ball in the net in the second half but Stelios Giannakopoulos’ effort was ruled out for offside.

The day’s other tie between Newcastle and Southampton at St James’ Park is due to kick off at 5.40pm.
