Reading must pay Cork City a further €24,750 after Kevin Doyle made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland last week.

The 22-year-old striker partnered new skipper Robbie Keane up front in Steve Staunton’s first game in charge as the Republic romped to an impressive 3-0 win over Sweden at Lansdowne Road.

And Reading could be making another payment to the eircom League champions later this season should they secure Premiership promotion.

But Reading director of football Nick Hammond insists Doyle is worth every penny.

"We signed Kevin for little under £80,000 (€116,500) in the summer and he’s repaid us with 15 goals so far this season," said Hammond.

"We have to pay Cork City a little bit more now he’s an international player, but to be honest, we’re happy to hand over the money."
