Everton midfielder Tim Cahill is set to serve a three-match suspension after failing in his appeal against the red card he was shown in Saturday's Merseyside derby.

The Australian will now be sidelined for game against Newcastle on Sunday, as well as the away trip to Arsenal on October 18th and the meeting with Manchester United at Goodison Park a week later.

Cahill was sent off for "serious foul play" by referee Mike Riley following a challenge on Xabi Alonso in Everton's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The English Football Association confirmed an independent regulatory commission had rejected Cahill's appeal.
