Ireland to host first ever major World Rugby women’s sevens event

The event will take place in UCD in August and will see Ireland compete

Irish rugby fans will experience the excitement of a major World Rugby women’s sevens tournament for the first time this August with the announcement that Women’s Sevens Dublin will be held in UCD on August 22nd and 23rd.

The IRFU were selected to host the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Qualifier 2015, which will see 12 teams, including Olympic qualified Brazil and Colombia, compete for the two remaining places on the coveted 2015-16 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

Ireland will also compete in a bid to qualify for the World Series for the first time ever.

Their involvement comes off the back of fifth places in Kazan and Malemort which earned them 24 Series points (fifth overall) and qualification for next month’s European Olympic Repechage tournament in Lisbon, Portugal (July 18-19)as well as the World Series qualification event in Dublin.

The other competing countries in Lisbon will be Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Ukraine, Portugal, Germany, Denmark, Romania, Belgium, Finland and Sweden. Three teams will progress to join Russia in the World Olympic Repechage in June 2016.

In Dublin 11 other teams, along with Ireland will compete. They are: Brazil, China, Colombia, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Netherlands, Samoa, South Africa and Wales.
