AIL Round-up: Garryowen took over the mantle at the top of the AIL Division One table with a convincing 34-8 win over their Limerick rivals Shannon at Dooradoyle this afternoon.
In the game of the day, with the two top sides pitted against each other, Garryowen will certainly hold the bragging rights over the reigning champions tonight. Paul Cunningham’s men put the icing on the cake when a last minute penalty try earned the home side a crucial bonus point.
The win comes just one week after Garryowen lost to St Mary’s in the semi-final of the AIB Cup at the same venue.
Winger Ciaran O'Boyle crossed the line for two tries and while under considerable pressure towards the end Garrowen dug deep to find two more tries. Anthony Kavanagh got the third while scrum-half Gerry Hurley’s quick thinking left Shannon holding-up a ruck ball close to their own line which ultimately led to the penalty try.
