‘An absolute character’: Connacht delighted to see Mack Hansen thriving with Ireland

Laid back off the field, but a flyer on it - rugby's new discovery Mack Hansen is fast becoming a poster boy after two matches in an Irish jersey.

"Certainly flavour of the month," says Connacht senior coach Pete Wilkins, "and getting due credit for his first couple of performances."

The 23-year-old, who was parachuted into Andy Farrell’s squad after just nine starts for Connacht, is certainly making the most of opportunities on the field.

“He’s an absolute character,” says Wilkins, “He is laid back and he is relaxed, but he applies himself really effectively, and he doesn’t shirk on work and extras, and learning his detail.

“While he may be a relaxed character and have that ability to take things in his stride, he doesn’t leave things to chance in terms of his preparation as a professional. It is nice blend to have in a player, particularly an outside back, where you are looking for that bit of excitement, ability to back yourself, to take calculated risk, and make the most of opportunities.”

The Canberra-born Hansen, who was enticed to Ireland by Connacht boss Andy Friend, quickly endeared himself to fans in Galway when he hit the ground running against the Bulls, scoring a try on his home debut. In nine appearances for Connacht, he has scored six tries, earning him a deserved call up to the Ireland camp.

“There is huge support for him at the Sportsground - players and staff - and the fans who associate with Connacht and want him to do well.

“To get off to such a good start [for Ireland], everyone is pleased and excited for him. A lot of people are pleased, but not surprised.”
