Milan ease through

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE ROUND-UP: Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko scored twice for European champions AC Milan in a 4-1 home win over Sparta Prague last night, moving the Italians into the quarter-finals after the first leg ended goalless.

At the end of an edgy first half, Milan broke the deadlock with Filippo Inzaghi's angled header from Cafu's right-wing cross.

Sparta drew level in the 59th minute through substitute Tomas Jun who slid home a Rastislav Michalik pass just two minutes after entering play to put the Czechs ahead on away goals.

Milan quickly restored their advantage though when Shevchenko headed home a Giuseppe Pancaro cross, and the striker made sure of Milan's place in the last eight with a confident finish in the 79th minute after being put through by a through pass from Brazilian Kaka.

Five minutes from the end midfielder Gennaro Gattuso thumped home a fourth goal with a 20-metre deflection.

French league leaders Monaco squeezed through to the quarter-finals, winning on away goals after beating 10-man Lokomotiv Moscow 1-0 last night for a 2-2 aggregate draw.

A solitary strike, after 60 minutes, by Croatian forward Dado Prso, who scored four goals earlier in the season against Deportivo Coruna, enabled Monaco to take their place in tomorrow's last-eight draw.

Their 1-0 victory on the night meant the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate and Monaco progressed on the away goals rule. Fernando Morientes' strike in their 2-1 defeat in Moscow proved vital.

Lokomotiv were reduced to 10 players when captain Dmitry Loskov was sent off after only 22 minutes following a foul on Morientes, for which he was shown a yellow card, and then dissent for which he was shown his second and, with it, a red card.
