Mersey mercy

Last week the Guardian's Football Unlimited website cleared up a longstanding mystery over the fate of one Sandy Young, who scored the winner for Everton in the 1906 FA Cup final against Newcastle. Legend had it that Young was hung for sheep stealing in Australia when he emigrated there after his retirement. Glad to report that this yarn isn't true at all - he was only sentenced to three years imprisonment for killing his brother. He was initially charged with murder but English football officials gave evidence on his behalf, claiming that "he had been subject to fits of temporary insanity" while playing for Everton. We're saying nothing.
