Tennis: Irish players Tristan Farron-Mahon and John McGahon went out in the first round of the Ulster Bank ITF Futures event which started at Limerick Lawn yesterday.

Samuel Groth of Australia had to work hard to get the better of Farron-Mahon 6-3 in the third set after the Irishman took the opening set 6-4.

McGahon went out in straight sets against Richard Wire of England, beaten 6-2, 7-6.

Number two seed, Matthew Smith of England had a comfortable straight sets win over another English player, Nikki Peel, 6-2, 6-3.

Ireland's Peter Clarke and Conor Niland go into action today.
