Women's Golf: Ireland left the best until last in the Women's Amateur Home International Series at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire yesterday. A week that started so disappointingly with defeat by England ended on a high with a 6-3 victory over Scotland which left them second overall.

England, meanwhile, came from behind to beat Wales, also 6-3 which gave them their 12th title in 15 years and robbed the Welsh not only of their second crown but also of the runners-up spot.

The Curtis Cup pair of Tricia Mangan and Martina Gillen were made to fight every inch of the way by Heather Macrae and Sally Watson before edging home on the final green and Deirdre Smith and Maura Morrin also got a foursomes point to send Ireland into lunch 2-1 ahead.

It was pretty obvious from an early stage in the afternoon that the Irish were going to romp home as Claire Coughlan and Martina Gillen both won 5 and 4 against Jenna Wilson and Louise Kenney respectively. Maura Morrin secured the point that ensured Scotland were beaten.
