International Olympic Committee vice-president Kevan Gosper said yesterday he had withdrawn from the race to replace retiring president Juan Antonio Samaranch.

The Australian said it would have been a "tough haul" lobbying overseas for votes and felt he might not have had the numbers.

Canadian Dick Pound and Belgian Jacques Rogge are now the main contenders for Samaranch's post.
