Hockey: Hermes and Instonians got their European Cup Winners Trophy campaigns off to winning starts yesterday, Hermes beating Howardian Ladies of Wales 3-1 in Villafranca, Italy, and Instonians emerging 3-0 winners over Eagles of Gibraltar in Vienna.

Two goals from Kristin Farrell and another from Jenny Burke had Hermes 3-0 up 10 minutes into the second half of their opening pool game, and, although the Welsh side pulled a goal back, the Irish Cup holders eased to a comfortable victory.

Similarly, Instonians were rarely troubled by their opponents, with a Chris Barnes double and a third goal from Neil Cooke giving them the points on day one of the tournament.
