NUI Galway 2-8 NUI Maynooth 0-8:Sigerson Cup/First round: Holders NUI Galway turned in an impressive second-half display at Dangan yesterday and goals in the 32nd and 38th minutes from Clare's Rory Donnelly and Donegal's Colm McFadden swung the game in their favour.

In the opening half NUI Maynooth, without Laois's Ross Munnelly and Mayo's Alan Dillon, took the game to the champions. Inspired by Karl Ennis and Mark Brehony, who kicked three fine points, Maynooth led by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time as Tadgh Brosnan also landed three frees.

Galway's cause had not been helped when Micheál Meehan went off with a leg injury after 12 minutes but his colleagues found their rhythm after the restart.
