Glenanne share top spot with YMCA

HOCKEY:AFTER A lengthy break from league action eight of Leinster's 10 first division sides were able to resume their campaigns on Saturday, only the tie between Three Rock Rovers and Monkstown falling to the weather.

It was, though, a frustrating return for Pembroke Wanderers, a Gordon Elliott hat-trick not even enough to give them a point from their game against Glenanne at Serpentine Avenue.

Stephen Brownlow’s treble and a goal from Fred van der Weij proved enough for the visitors, who never trailed in the game.

Pembroke, who gave a debut to former Lisnagarvey goalkeeper Davey Williamson and had Justin Sherriff making his first appearance of the season, pulled goals back when they fell 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 behind, but they couldn’t force an equaliser, Dutchman Fred van der Weij’s score proving decisive.

Glenanne, then, moved three points clear of Pembroke, level with YMCA – who beat Weston 3-0 – at the top of the table.

Railway Union stay fourth, with goals in the last 10 minutes from Peter English and Fiachra Maher helping them to rescue a point from their game away to Fingal who had led 2-0.

UCD and Corinthian, meanwhile, played out a scoreless draw at Belfield.
