The Gala All-Ireland championship got off to flying start on Saturday with victory for Galway over Tipperary 1-12 to 2-6, while the defending All-Ireland and National League champions Cork overcame Wexford 1-10 to 1-5 in Páirc Uí Rinn.

The match between Limerick and Kilkenny in Mungret in Limerick was called off following a pitch inspection on Saturday morning.

Galway entered this game as underdogs while Tipperary were hot favourites having reached the League final recently. In contrast, Galway didn't win in this year's League campaign and perhaps it was this hunger that drove them.

Galway were 0-2 up after two early points from Orla Kilkenny and they never allowed Tipperary to take the lead.
