DIT 2-15 NUI Maynooth 0-12:The 2009 runners-up, Dublin Institute of Technology, are back in the running for a maiden Sigerson Cup success after booking their place in the semi-finals yesterday.
Inspired by Kerry forward Darran O’Sullivan and Mayo duo Aidan O’Shea and Jason Doherty, DIT finished strongly against last year’s beaten finalists NUI Maynooth on the all-weather pitch at Bray Emmets yesterday.
And now DIT, beaten quarter-finalists against DCU last year, could face the holders again in the last four.
The semi-final draw has decreed that DIT will play DCU or UCD in the last four over finals weekend at Athlone IT.
Doherty was the star turn for DIT in attack yesterday as the lethal hitman bagged 0-8, including four points from play.
Eight DIT players registered scores from play in total, as NUI Maynooth managed just four points from play during the entire game. Nicky Devereaux scored a 20th minute goal as DIT, who played against the wind in the opening half, led by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time.
But spirited Maynooth were just a point behind before DIT made the game safe with a run of 1-5 without reply in the closing minutes.
Offaly corner forward Bernard Allen came off the bench to score 1-1 late on. NUI Maynooth provided dogged resistance throughout but were overrun as DIT finished with a flourish.
