Determined Wicklow too hot for Laois

Division Two Round-up:Wicklow sprung a major upset by defeating fancied Laois 2-12 to 1-12 at Arklow yesterday.

Corner-forward Wayne O'Gorman scored a goal in each half for the winners to help inspire a famous victory. His first after 23 minutes helped Wicklow lead 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval.

Laois responded after the restart as substitute Seamus Dwyer (twice), Conor Dunne and James Young (65) added points to reduce the deficit before full-forward Tommy Fitzgerald's goal put the visitors ahead, 1-12 to 1-11.

Joe Murphy levelled the scores with an 80-yard free and in the 27th minute of the second half, O'Gorman finished to the net for his second goal after good work by Jonathan O'Neill.

Meanwhile in Division 2B, Kildare held Westmeath to a 2-13 to 1-16 draw at Cusack Park despite losing David Harney who was sent off in the second half.

Westmeath led 0-11 to 0-6 at the interval. But two goals from Kildare's Brendan Byrne and points from Billy White and Mattie Dowd put them in control.

However Barry Kennedy grabbed a 50th minute goal for Westmeath and late points from Enda Loughlin and Ronan Whelan secured them a draw.

At Castlebar, dual star Keith Higgins scored seven second-half points to help Mayo to a surprise 2-13 to 1-8 win over Kerry.

Michael Conway's early goal, helped Kerry lead 1-6 to 1-2 at the interval. Bobby O'Sullivan added two second half points for the visitors but Mayo finished strongly, Higgins and Ger Whyte adding points before Paul Broderick added a goal in injury time.

The Meath v Carlow game was postponed while Derry defeated Armagh, 2-13 to 0-9.
