In truth, Belvedere will count themselves unlucky at the end of a pulsating hour's rugby. St Mary's were confined to a defensive mode for long stretches and were thankful for their ability to strike when the opportunity presented itself.

In an error-ridden first half, St Mary's took the lead when Robert Gannon found the posts from 30 metres out. Four minutes into the second half, the St Mary's defence parted to allow tighthead prop Eamonn Byrne through for what looked like a crucial breakthrough.

Thereafter, Belvedere owned the ball but they couldn't convert possession into points and it looked like St Mary's would make them pay the ultimate price when second row Conor McInerney crossed the line four minutes from the end of normal time.

However, Belvedere came back strongly for Carson to intelligently pop over the last-gasp dropped goal.
