US Tour: American Chad Campbell produced a remarkable final round of six-under-par 66 to win the Bay Hill Invitational in Orlando last night as overnight leader Australia's Stuart Appleby fell away on the last day.
Campbell started the day five shots behind Appleby and there seemed little chance of an upset until a two-shot swing at the ninth. The Australian was twice in bunkers to drop a shot as Campbell birdied.
Campbell followed with three more birdies on the back nine while Appleby dropped further shots at the 11th, 14th, 17th and double-bogeyed the 18th. In the end Campbell had a comfortable six-shot victory with an 18-under-par total of 270.
Ireland's Darren Clarke had a disappointing finish to his tournament after fighting his way back into third place on the front nine.
Clarke was four under for his round and 12 under for the tournament and had birdied five of the previous seven holes when it all went wrong on the par five 12th.
A bladed chip went fully 20 yards past the cup and led to a bogey and, clearly rattled by the mistake, the Irish player proceeded to drop shots at the next two holes. He regrouped to birdie the par five 16th but then went into water at the last to record a double bogey for a level par 72 and a tie for sixth place.
